BMKG Issues Severe Weather Warning: Heavy Rains and Landslide Risks Loom Over Bener Meriah

Banda Aceh News | SIMPANG TIGA REDELONG, ACEH — The threat of flash floods and landslides looms heavily over several highland districts in Aceh following an extreme weather advisory released by the Sultan Iskandar Muda Class I Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). Bener Meriah Regency has been specifically flagged as a high-risk zone vulnerable to heavy to severe rainfall from November 6 to November 12, 2026.

In response to the warning, the Bener Meriah Regency Government has issued an urgent alert urging residents—particularly those residing near riverbanks, steep hillsides, and historical landslide-prone zones—to dramatically heighten their disaster preparedness.

The regional advisory references an official BMKG press release issued on November 6, 2026, which highlights surging atmospheric instability driving intensified rainfall patterns across the province.

Atmospheric Drivers Behind the Extreme Weather

BMKG analysts reported active Equatorial Kelvin and Rossby waves, coupled with pronounced wind shear and localized convergence zones, which are aggressively fueling convective rain cloud development.

These atmospheric triggers are further amplified by warm sea surface temperatures hovering between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius, alongside exceptionally high regional humidity levels.

In addition to Bener Meriah, regions identified under the high-warning bracket include Central Aceh, Gayo Lues, North Aceh, and East Aceh, with forecasts warning of heavy downpours accompanied by frequent lightning and powerful gusts of wind.

BPBD Urges Immediate Vigilance

Bener Meriah Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Head Ilham Abdi emphasized that the week-long extreme weather outlook poses severe hydrometeorological threats, ranging from flash floods and mudslides to uprooted trees.

Given the regency’s rugged mountainous geography and extensive river networks, prolonged rainfall significantly elevates the risk of sudden environmental hazards.

“We ask residents not to take weather shifts lightly, especially when heavy rain persists for hours. Those living in vulnerable zones must increase alertness and avoid high-risk activities,” Ilham stated.

Authorities have advised citizens to track official climate updates through BMKG’s official communication channels (@infobmkg_aceh, Emergency Call Center 08116788595, or [email protected]).

“We also urge the public to immediately report any early warning signs of danger to local village officials or emergency responders—such as rising river water levels, ground shifting, or unstable trees,” he concluded.
